Finding the silver lining in things has been my internal mantra for several years. Almost every crappy situation is an opportunity to learn something and grow from that experience.

I lamented recently about my garden. It’s not happening and my one lone tomato plant looks pretty sad. At one point during my more hopeful gardening days this season, I had wrapped my garden with netting to keep the cats from pooping in the raised beds and keep the deer out or at least try to deter them.

Since my garden no longer needs protecting, I quickly applied that netting to my back porch. It’s just propped up for now but it solved a problem that has been plaguing me: porch presents from the chickens. Now that they can’t get on the porch, I can enjoy strolling out on it barefoot. It’s ridiculously pleasant now that I’ve washed the poop off and am preventing the flock of feather dusters from claiming my porch for themselves. It’s the little things that can bring us joy.

I’m not the only one who enjoys relaxing on the porch.

I think the local grasshopper population has also found a silver lining to my repurposing the netting. They are safe from the chickens on the porch. It’s all about perspective.
